Who was Alexander Macomb Jr.?
Alexander Macomb Jr.
When was the area named Macomb?Macomb County
The Michigan State Legislature removed land area from Macomb to create Oakland, Lapeer, Genesee, and St. Clair Counties.
The remainder was named Macomb County as we know it today. Therefore the area of Macomb once included the entire area north of Wayne County, from as far North and West as what we know today as Flint Michigan, and as far north and east as what we know today as Port Huron.
Alexander Macomb Jr was commander of the army defending New York from British Invasion in 1814 during the War of 1812.
Alexander Macomb Jr is known as the hero of Plattsburg, for the defeat of the British Army at Plattsburg. Later he became commanding general of the entire US Army from 1828 until his death in 1841.
He was one of the original Army Corps of Engineers and was among the unit charged with establishing the Unites States Military Academy at West Point, New York. He also among the first class at the new Academy although he is not given credit for being so due to his prior military service.
My question is, "Did Alexander Macomb Jr. ever meet George Washington?"
While there is no direct evidence of this which I can locate, he and his family were located in New York City while New York City was the capital of the United States of America under George Washington.
Also, he was recommended to the New York State Militia by Alexander Hamilton after George Washington was no longer President of the United States. Alexander Hamilton was the Secretary of the Treasury and a personal favorite of Geaorge Washington.
If you ever have an opportunity to see the stage play "Hamilton", I highly recommend it. The story of Alexander Hamilton's life is an amazing one.
